Don't let the ice melt!

The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms

Program partnership with Fantoche International Festival for Animated Film Baden

Who could have known that a harmless nuclear weapon test in the Arctic would bring a prehistoric giant monster to life? And that this is heading to New York of all places? No one! Really no one could have known that human intervention in nature could have negative consequences. No one.

In view of the continued success of GODZILLA (1954), THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS receives relatively little attention. Very wrongly so, as the film paved the way for a whole series of giant monsters. The film is based on the short story “The Foghorn” by Ray Bradbury, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Stop Motion forefather Ray Harryhausen personally brought the monster to life from the depths of the Arctic ice. The film also offers fantastic effects in other respects, is told in a gripping way and somehow makes us think back longingly to a time when people have already committed many stupid things, but still involved science to correct the misconduct.

THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS will be shown as a stop-motion double feature together with the short film SHRINE OF ABOMINATIONS.
