In terms of content, the remake of classic slasher MANIAC and the first-person parkour shooter HARDCORE HENRY have absolutely nothing to do with each other. But they share one point of view — a point of view. Because you slowly get lazy after over 40 double feartures, that's definitely enough for a combination.
There was great skepticism when it was announced that William Lustig's cult serial killer film was being remade and that also starring depressiv hobbit Elijah Wood. After all, horror connoisseur Alexandre Aja was at the start and so it happened that MANIAC (2012) was a positive surprise for many. Window doll shop owner Frank is leading a double life as a murderer of women, while it is becoming increasingly dangerous for artist Anna, who is working with him for an exhibition. Not for the faint of heart.
HARDCORE HENRY (2015) is even more consistent as MANIAC and told entirely from a POV perspective. Henry is raised from the dead — physically modified, but freed from his memory. In a breathless videogames-like marathon, he must free his wife from the clutches of a telekinetic warlord. Director Ilya Naishuller has made a name for himself with crazy music videos and his love for Point of View cameras. Since his low budget beginnings, he has had a steep career and was able to let off steam with larger budgets at NOBODY (2021) and HEADS OF STATE (2025).
