Yasamin moved from Iran to Canada with her family. At school, she tries hard to integrate herself and makes friends with a group of students who attach great importance to their appearance. To hide her origins, Yasamin dyes her hair blonde. But the more she wants to adapt to the foreign ideal of beauty, the stronger a supernatural force within her becomes.
Iranian-Canadian director Ava Maria Safai's debut feature film is more social drama than horror and yet is told with an astonishing amount of humor and ease. Issues such as racism and the loss of cultural identity, but also coming-of-age issues such as group membership and self-doubt are addressed. Yasamin's family is written and played in a wonderfully multi-faceted way, dealing with the challenges of their new living environment in very different ways and whose tips are not always entirely helpful.
